About the Lectures
This event takes place at the new Nagaoka civic centre, A-ore Nagaoka, adjacent to Nagaoka train station, close to the Shinano River. The event is organised by the the Nagaoka Municipal Science Museum, in conjunction with an exhibition of Flame Pottery in the Shinano River region at the same venue, organised by the Shinano River Route of the Flame Pottery Association. The event follows on from Nagaoka Mayor Mori Tamio’s visit to London in September 2012 for the opening of the Flame and Water Pots exhibition. Although the Flame and Water Pots exhibition has finished, a Flame Pot from the site of Dodaira in Niigata Prefecture continues on display in the Mitsubishi Corporation Japanese Galleries at the British Museum. About the Speakers
Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere (Research Director at the Sainsbury Institute and Curator in the Japanese Section at the British Museum) will speak about researching the Japanese ceramic collections at the British Museum.
Simon Kaner (Head, Centre for Archaeology and Heritage at the Sainsbury Institute) will speak on the two recent exhibitions featuring Jomon archaeology at the British Museum, the Power of Dogu: ceramic figures from Ancient Japan annd Flame and Water Pots.
Kobayashi Tatsuo (Senior Advisor on Archaeology at the Sainsbury Institute and Professor Emeritus, Kokuguin University, Tokyo) will moderate a discussion on Jomon culture in the world.
