About the Conference
This is a international conference titled ‘Japanese Cultural Studies outside of Japan – its current status and future perspectives’ organised by the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures (SISJAC) and Centre for Japanese Studies, University of East Anglia (UEA), in association with the Global Exchange Organisation for Research and Education, Gakushuin University.
The conference will identify challenges faced by the higher education institutions and museums in the UK and elsewhere in Europe where their research, teaching and collections concern Japanese arts and cultures, and will seek to offer solutions.
From 9:30am, presentations and discussion on the status and issues surrounding international collaborations in Japanese studies will take place. Speakers are established researchers currently working for universities and museums in Japan, the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
This will be followed by a panel discussion from 3:30pm chaired by Professor Toshio Watanabe (SISJAC/UEA). Discussions will cover all aspects of the conference, namely, (1) status and challenges of Japanese cultural studies and Japanese art collections in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, and (2) status and issues surrounding Japanese efforts towards international collaboration. Panellists are Dr Simon Kaner (SISJAC/UEA), Professor Yoshi Miki (National Museum of Japanese History), Professor Nicole Rousmaniere (SISJAC/British Museum), and Professor Melanie Trede (Heidelberg University). Discussions will include questions from the floor and we look forward to the audience members’ input to the conference.
The conference is open to the public on 14 July and will be followed by a drinks reception at the Norwich Cathedral Hostry to which all are invited.
*The timing of the each session may be subject to change.
Admission is open to all and free but registration is required. If you would like to attend, please email the Sainsbury Institute stating your name and affiliation or phone 01603-597507.
