Joseph Bills read Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Japanese Studies) at the University of Cambridge from 2017 to 2021, before completing his MPhil by Research in 2022. He then embarked on a research project funded by the MEXT at Keio University. His research focuses on early-modern Japanese literature, particularly the genre of humorous popular prose known as kusazōshi. He also has an interest in the digital humanities, especially the fields of digitisation and database curation.
