Manga and Anime

Dr Heinze’s research interest extends to cover Japanese mass media, especially manga and television shows. As part of his output, he has delivered a few Third Thursday Lectures on Japanese manga, mostly on the interpreted representation of history and historical figures (Lord Nelson and Siebold Oine) in Japanese visual popular media. Further research topics include the depiction of cultural phenomenon such as the prevalence of hikikomori or ‘loners’ and time travel narratives in manga. Recent publications include articles in the The Japan Forum,Contemporary Japan, and online articles in the Electronic Journal for Contemporary Japanese Studies(EJCJS).
