[Closed] Call for Contributions – Transnational Japanisms: Art, craft, design

A conference in memory of Professor Toshio Watanabe

Contributions are invited in a number of different formats to complement several keynote lectures: brief talks (possibly in Professor Watanabe’s beloved pecha-kucha style), digital presentations and posters. We are looking to mix established with newly emerging voices, to honour Professor Watanabe’s dedication to supporting younger specialists.

The conference is being organised by the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, the Department of East Asian Art History at the University of Zurich, and the University of Stockholm, and other interested organisations.

Please submit expressions of interest in the form of a title and 100 word abstract by 15 January 2026 to sisjac@sainsbury-institute.org, including your contact details and current affiliation / position.  Depending on the abstracts received, we may be able to offer some online participation, although in person is preferred. We plan to confirm participation for presenters by early February.

「トランスナショナル・ジャパニズム：

美術・工芸・デザイン」

— 渡辺俊夫教授 メモリアル国際会議 —

本国際会議は、日本に関わる美術・工芸・デザイン研究の「トランスナショナル」な視点からの展開と今後の展望を考察することを目的とする二日間のイベントです。

本会議は、セインズベリー日本藝術研究所名誉教授、ロンドン芸術大学における Transnational Art, Identity and Nation リサーチセンター創設ディレクター、ならびに Japan Art History Forum 元会長であった故渡辺俊夫教授（1945–2025）のご業績を称えるものです。

本会議では、複数の基調講演に加え、以下のような多様な形式による発表を広く募集いたします。

• ショート・プレゼンテーション（渡辺教授が特に好まれた「ペチャクチャ」形式での発表も歓迎します）
• デジタル・プレゼンテーション
• ポスター発表

各分野の第一線で活躍する研究者と若手研究者が共に議論を深める場とすることで、若手支援に尽力された渡辺教授の精神を継承したいと考えています。

本会議は、セインズベリー日本藝術研究所、チェルシー・カレッジ・オブ・アーツ、ロンドン芸術大学、チューリッヒ大学東アジア美術史学科、ストックホルム大学ほかの共同主催により開催されます。
