Call for Applications for the
University of Tokyo 2014 Summer Programme
in Japanese Archaeology and Heritage

About the Programme

The University of Tokyo, in conjunction with the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, invites applications from undergraduate students interested in Japanese archaeology and heritage to take part in a new two-week Summer School programme in Japan from 30th July to 13th August.

The Summer School will involve a week based in Tokyo (30th July to 6th August), visiting museums and excavation sites and attending a few lectures, followed by a week at the Tokyo University Tokoro Field Station (from 6th to 13th August) in the north of Hokkaido. Hokkaido visit will include a few lectures, heritage sites and archaeological excavation visits at the Tokoro settlement dating to the Satsumon and Okhotsk periods (5th-13th centuries CE) which has been the focus of a long-term research project at the University of Tokyo. The Summer School will be led by Akira Matsuda, Lecturer in Japanese Artistic Heritage at the University of East Anglia and Academic Associate at the Sainsbury Institute.

Places to visit in Tokyo include:

  • Tokyo National Museum

  • National Museum of Japanese History

  • Edo-Tokyo Museum

  • The University Museum, the University of Tokyo

  • Archaeological Research Unit, the University of Tokyo

In Hokkaido, the participants will visit the Archaeological park of Tokoro (Kitami city in Hokkaido Prefecture) and take part in excavation of pit dwellings attributed to the Satsumon culture (7th to 13th century CE) at Tokoro.

Costs of the stay in Japan (food, accommodation, internal travel) will be covered by the University of Tokyo. Successful applicants will be responsible for their own international travel costs. The Summer Programme will be taught in English. No Japanese language or previous experience of Japan is required.

Applicants should in the first instance send a short statement of interest and a one page CV to Akira Matsuda (a.matsuda@uea.ac.uk) by 30th May 2014. Successful applicants will be notified in early June.
