Japan is a leader in the field of technology, from robotics to futuristic city design. From September 2018, The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures will launch a new research strand that brings together the technical innovations of Japanese art and design with the use of digital technology to understand Japanese arts and cultures.

Please join us for a Digital Japan Mini-Festival at The Forum, Norwich from September 20-22nd, 2018. An exhibition will showcase current research on Japan including digitized materials, digital-born art and artefacts, and exhibits on digital media. On Friday 21st from 10am-3pm, a series of mini-lectures will introduce researchers from all over the world working with digital materials for studying Japan.The Digital Japan Mini-Festival offers a fascinating overview of a fast-developing field.

Admission free, all welcome. Booking is not required.

Mini-Lectures

At The Auditorium, The Forum, Norwich, NR2 1BH

A series of mini-lectures will be held at The Forum Auditorium from 10am-3pm on Friday 21st September. Academic researchers from the UK and Japan will discuss their use of digital materials to enhance their research. Topics will range from digitizing the Japanese print collection at the British Museum, to using Facebook and Instagram to promote research and connect with other researchers in Japanese Studies. Digital filmmakers will explain how film can be used as a research method, and researcher-photographers will discuss documenting disaster.
