About the Talk
Why is Alice in Wonderland so popular in Japan? Since they first appeared in Japan in 1899, Lewis Carroll’s Alice novels have been translated into Japanese over 400 times by authors as elite as Akutagawa Ryūnosuke and Mishima Yukio. Alice literature led to Alice art by prestigious artists such as Kusama Yayoi, whose works in turn spawned adaptations into media as diverse as comics and stationery, film and food. This presentation examines key examples of Alice literature, art, and film to examine how Alice in Wonderland functions as part of contemporary Japanese society.
