These workshops are associated with the exhibition Okinawan Kōgei: Crafting Continuity and Change in collaboration with the University of East Anglia, the Centre for Japanese Studies, Okinawa Prefectural Museum of the Arts, Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, and Norwich University of the Arts.
Weaving
Weave your own Kasuri Keyring strap
Dive into the world of Okinawan textiles and learn the traditional Kasuri weaving technique. Participants at this workshop will weave a small, stylish keyring and gain hands-on experience in this cherished Okinawan craft.
Dyeing
design your own Bingata cloth
Unleash your creativity with Bingata, a vibrant and traditional Okinawan resist-dyeing technique. using pre-prepared stencils, this demonstration will show how to craft unique, colourful designs to take home – your very own piece of Okinawan art!
Sculpting
Create your own Okinawan guardian lion
Shape your very own ‘shiisa’ – the iconic Okinawan Guardian lion – out of clay. With expert guidance, attendees will create a protective figure, learning the ancient art of Okinawan clay sculpting and bringing a piece of tradition to life.
