About the Event

This conference, to be held in Niigata city situated at the mouth of the Shinano River (home of the Jomon Flame pots), will examine relationships between waterfront locales and archaeological remains. Case studies will be presented from the Niigata Plain and Shinano River, with comparative examples of prehistoric lake villages from Switzerland (designated World Heritage in 2011) and the Fens of East Anglia in England. The conference is organised in association with the Shinano-Chikuma River Project at the Sainsbury Institute.

Simon Kaner, Head of Centre for Archaeology and Heritage, will be participating in the conference as discussant and translator.
