How to Curate a Region? Japan, Asia, and the Politics of Display is an international symposium bringing together scholars and curators from Latin America and Japan to explore a central question: how do exhibitions shape the idea of a region?
Taking place on 29 May 2026 at El Colegio de México, the symposium will open with a keynote lecture by Tatehata Akira, followed by two panel discussions. The first examines regionalisation as a curatorial model, considering how institutions and exhibition practices have constructed regional narratives, with particular focus on Asia and Japan’s strategic role in shaping transnational networks. The second turns to Japan as a curatorial object, tracing how Mexico and Latin America have imagined and presented Japanese art and culture.
This symposium is organised by Edisabel Marrero Tejeda (Ishibashi Foundation Network Leader Fellow), in collaboration with the Terry Welch Chair in Japanese Art Studies and the Japan Foundation Mexico, as part of Edisabel’s project for the Ishibashi Foundation Network Leader Fellowship (IFNet) Programme.
