Dear Friends,
Welcome to the first issue of our new-format e-magazine. We listened to your feedback and the e-magazine will now be sent out more regularly, once every two months.
Cultural ties between the two countries are currently being celebrated through the Japan-UK Season of Culture, and a highlight of this will be the Manga exhibition, which opens at the British Museum later this month. It will be the largest exhibition of manga to take place outside of Japan, and it is curated by the Sainsbury Institute’s Research Director Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere and Senior Digital Humanities Officer Dr Ryoko Matsuba, so the theme of this month’s issue is manga. From all of us at the Sainsbury Institute, please enjoy.
This month Japan celebrates the beginning of the new Reiwa era, with the accession of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, following the abdication of his father, the Emperor Emeritus Akihito. On behalf of everyone at the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures we congratulate their Imperial Majesties Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, and send our warmest regards to all of our friends and colleagues in Japan.
Professor David Richardson
Chair of the Management Board of the Sainsbury Institute
