Dear Friends, supporters and Japanese arts and culture enthusiasts,
Welcome to the spring 2014 edition of our e-magazine. After a mild winter, spring came very quickly to Norwich. Our sake tasting event in early March was just in time to coincide with the last of the cherry blossoms in the Cathedral Close. In this edition, Sir Tim Lankester, who is an ardent supporter of the Institute and member of our Management Board, talks about the role of arts and culture in our lives and his vision for the Institute. Our Institute abroad section features an important exhibition that took place in Japan early this year on the so called ‘living national treasures’, a theme that our Research Director Professor Rousmaniere has been continuing to investigate since one of her most successful exhibition she curated, Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan, at the British Museum in 2007. The Japanese museum we highlight in this edition is the Nezu Museum, which lies in the heart of Tokyo and has become a ‘must see’ place for Japanese art lovers both in Japan and abroad. Turning our gaze locally to Norwich, we will introduce the South Asian Decorative Arts and Crafts Collection Trust, our sister organization in the Sainsbury Institute for Arts, University of East Anglia. You can also read a letter from one of our former Sainsbury Fellows and more about treasures in the Lisa Sainsbury Library. I hope you enjoy this edition, and if you want to learn about Japanese arts and culture, please join our Friends’ scheme: https://sainsbury-institute.org/support-us/
