Christopher J. Hayes is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism & Events Management in Teesside University International Business School, Teesside University. He has a PhD in Global Language-Based Area studies from Cardiff University, UK. His research concerns inbound tourism development in Japan, Japan’s international destination image, and placemaking. He is interested in international perceptions of Japan as a tourism destination and the influence of foreign media on destination image. In recent years he has focussed on tourism development through international sports events, a national strategy which combines the Japanese government’s aims of becoming both a Tourism Nation and a Sports Nation, using the Japan 2019 Rugby World Cup and its legacy as a case study. His research has been published in the electronic journal of contemporary japanese studies, Event Management, Hospitality & Society, and Tourism & Hospitality. Christopher is highly active in the UK Japanese Studies community, sitting on the Council of the British Association for Japanese Studies and serving as Alumni Coordinator for the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. Christopher has worked for and with the Sainsbury Institute on a number of projects since 2020, including the highly successful Online Summer Programmer series, 2020-2022.
