Statement regarding the Japanese Archaeological Association Library and the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures
The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures fully understands and respects the decision of the Japanese Archaeological Association not to send its Library overseas. The Sainsbury Institute has been pleased to help the Japanese Archaeological Association in the process of securing a long-term sustainable future for this important research resource.
The Sainsbury Institute took on the management of the Library at the request of the Board of the Japanese Archaeological Association, between March and October 2010, securing the move of the books from the Ichikawa Archaeological Museum to the secure storage facility at Higashi Tokorozawa, where the Japanese Archaeological Association has been storing a large portion of the Library for which there was not space at the Ichikawa Archaeological Museum. The management of the Library has now been returned to the Japanese Archaeological Association.
The Sainsbury Institute was already looking into options to keep the Library in Japan, and thinking about how to make parts of the Library available in a digital format. The Sainsbury Institute will continue to develop its projects in Japanese archaeology, and looks forward to continuing to work with all Japanese archaeologists and the Japanese Archaeological Association to enhance the profile of Japanese archaeology in Europe and elsewhere.
